Liberia
LIBERIA is a coastal nation of West Africa. Its land boundaries are shared with three nations: Guinea, Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast. Monrovia is the capital city. The many ethnic divisions include the Kpelle, Bassa, Gio, Kru, Gola, Dan, and Vai.
About 5% of the people are the descendants of repatriated American slaves. Seventy percent of the populations follows traditional religions. English is the official language spoken by about 20% of the people.
Among the many art forms valued by tourists are carved wooden masks including masks for the secret Poro society of the Dan People of Liberia and Ivory Coast. These masks are even more precious today because so much of the country's art was destroyed during the long civil war.
