TANZANIA a coastal nation of East Africa consists of two formally independent countries, the island of Zanzibar and Tanganyika which united into one nation in 1964. Mainland Tanzania is not only bordered by the Indian Ocean, but also by 8 countries. They are Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. The capital city is Dar es Salaam. Its snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa. The universal language is Kiswahili with English second. Among Tanzania's tourist attractions are its several wonderful game parks. Among the over 100 ethnic groups are the Masai, Luo, and Makonde. Many Tanzanian painters and writers are well known. The modern carvings of the Makonde people are especially collectable. Their unique works are carved from the strong wood of the ebony tree.
